Ten faculty members in the George R. Brown School of Engineering are ranked among the world’s highly cited researchers, including seven in the materials science category.
The 2019 Highly Cited Researchers list is a global accounting of scientists who produced the last decade’s most influential papers, compiled by the Web of Science group, a Clarivate Analytics company.
The list recognizes researchers “who produced multiple papers ranking in the top 1% by citations for their field and year of publication, demonstrating significant research influence among their peers,” according to Web of Science. It selected 6,216 researchers for their performance in 21 fields and for cross-field influence in scholarly publications between 2008 and 2018.
The Rice researchers recognized for their influence and productivity are:
  • Pulickel M. Ajayan, the Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor in Engineering, professor and chair of MSNE, professor of chemistry
  • Pedro J.J. Alvarez, the George R. Brown Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • Naomi Halas, the Stanley C. Moore Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, of biomedical engineering, chemistry, and of physics and astronomy
  • Boris I. Jakobson, the Karl F. Hasselmann Chair of Engineering, professor of MSNE and of chemistry
  • Jun Lou, professor of MSNE and associate department chair
  • Aditya D. Mohite, associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering (ChBE)
  • Peter Nordlander, the Wiess Chair and Professor of Physics and Astronomy, professor of ECE, and of MSNE
  • James M. Tour, the T. T. and W. F. Chao Professor of Chemistry, and professor of materials science and nanoengineering, and computer science
  • Haotian Wang, the William Marsh Rice Trustee Chair Assistant Professor of ChBE
Mohite and Wang were cited in the cross-field category, and Alvarez in environment and ecology. The others were listed in the materials science category. Erez Lieberman Aiden, whose principal affiliation is as assistant professor of molecular and human genetics at Baylor College of Medicine, and who also serves as assistant professor of computer science at Rice, was ranked in the cross-field category.
